Google isn’t about making a web browser for its users. I now have to add Tab Muter to overcome a feature that Google took away. I had to add the Mute Tab extension to overcome a deficiency in Chrome’s configurability.

my old computer i had somehow found myself on chrome flags and turned on a very convenient option to mute tabs by clicking the little music icon but it seems to not exist anymore. That way, I don’t get blasted by impolite sites that blare loud audio because they just must start their videos when you land on their site. This content is likely not relevant anymore. With Mute Tab, I can configure it to default to muting the tabs. Maybe the author will collaborate with other muting extension authors, like for Mute Tab ( ) to add more features, like letting users choose the default audio behavior when opening new tabs. This extension has only one purpose: to restore tab-specific muting.

Hopefully when Google yanks chrome://flags/#sound-content-setting the Tab Muter extension will still work to mute individual tabs. Alas, many of the bug tickets requesting changes in Chrome are made and discussed by a few select elite users that do not represent even a reasonable sampling of the user community. Google has not provided reasonable explanations for why they removed this feature. One day the chrome://flags/#sound-content-setting setting will disappear, too, and users will be stuck with Google’s remaining choice to mute all tabs for a site. All chrome://flags are considered experimental.
